I was commissioned to produce an illustration for the 2018 Federated Logic Conference at the Computer Science Department, in the University of Oxford.
The brief was to create an image of the Oxford skyline that was relevant to the conference and involved a lot of colour. I chose to use the Penrose tiling that paves the Mathematics Institute forecourt as an overlay on the skyline. A Penrose tiling can have both reflection symmetry and a fivefold rotational symmetry, and is named after the mathematician and physicist Roger Penrose, who investigated them in the 1970s.
The work was done by hand in ink and watercolour, before being digitally edited.
